Oliver Sutton Owen
I was born and raised in the UK and moved to Catalonia in 1999. Since then I have worked mainly in the field of education. I have worked as an English teacher for many years and also as a lecturer at an American university located in Barcelona, teaching courses in the area of sociology and cultural studies.
Approaching 50, and after a difficult period in my life, I took a high dose of psilocybin mushrooms (also known as magic mushrooms) in a controlled setting with a therapist.
The experience proved to be quite transformative. It set in motion a series of changes in my life which resulted in me getting married, moving to a small village in the pre-Pyrenees and generally being more intentional about the direction of my life. During this period I also started exploring both therapeutic techniques and the technology of ceremony and ritual.
Regarding the former, I practice meditation and have visited a Zen temple in Japan to participate in a sesshin (a period of intensive meditation), I have studied and been practicing Reiki, and I have completed a year-long course in sound therapy, which I have been taking every opportunity to practice over the last year and a half.
Regarding ceremony and ritual, I have been experimenting with various approaches to creating a safe ceremonial context in order to contain the intensities of the mushroom experience. These include a journey to Sierra Mazateca in Mexico to learn from indigenous Mazatec healers and working with therapists to create ritualised settings for the therapeutic use of mushrooms.
I feel that the time is now right to allow this period of exploration to give way to practicing the techniques I have been gathering in a semi-professional capacity. This transition started in March of this year with the first retreat that I organised with my collaborator Carla Escursell as part of our project After the Rains and continues now with the establishment of my private practice under the name, Sound and Plant Medicine.
